Flower of the Soul

Escape Room Experience

Group Project | 2024

Flower of Soul is a multi-media escape room experience designed for 3-4 players with a one-hour duration. Created by Sini He, Yuehao Liu, Viola Liang, and Yang Jiao as part of the Escape Rooms Design & Immersive Theatre module at Goldsmiths, University of London, the project explores the topics of identity, humanity, and individual growth through the examination of childhood trauma. Players are invited to piece together the story of the protagonist Mia and discover hidden truths by navigating the stroy world in person, collecting clues, and solving various puzzles.  The experience unfolds in three phases: awakening with amnesia in Mia's apartment, investigating the main room, and unlocking the workspace to reveal the truth.

The technical setup of this project integrates hardware and software to create the interactive experience. Data transmission is handled over a local network using the OSC protocol, with Clockwork Dog's COGS software chosen for its flexibility and compatibility with non-linear cues and Zigbee devices. Key interactions include a jigsaw puzzle that triggers video playback and a series of Philips Hue Buttons that open a magic box when pressed correctly.

I was responsible for the technical execution and testing of interactive puzzles using COGS, managing their installations, and developing the logic for RFID-based video activation and wireless buttons to open the magic box. I extended connections through soldering, installed RFID readers and tags on props, and crafted additional props by cutting pipes and fabric. I also ensured a neat scene setup by fixing and concealing wires. Additionally, I contributed to the narrative design by writing the story's background, shaping characters' personalities, and designing narrative elements.
